The Parliamentary ad-hoc committee investigating the chaotic scenes at the Appointments Committee vetting has announced that public hearings will resume on Friday, February 7, 2025.
This comes after a sudden suspension of proceedings on Wednesday, February 5, which initially caused confusion within the House.
Committee Chairman, Emmanuel Bedzrah, confirmed the resumption of work in an interview with Joy FM, stating:
“I need to meet with my committee members this morning. We agreed to have a meeting at 3 O’clock—by then, I would have received some information from the Speaker. So, for today, there won’t be any public hearings. We will continue tomorrow [Friday, February 7].”
The suspension of proceedings earlier in the week was first attributed to a directive from Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
However, it was later revealed that the Speaker had not ordered the stoppage. Instead, the decision had been made by the Clerk of Parliament, sparking uncertainty and speculation about internal parliamentary communication.
Despite this initial confusion, Bedzrah indicated that Speaker Bagbin has now given explicit instructions for the hearings to continue without further delays:
“…The Speaker called and said, ‘No, we cannot stop this work, we should continue, and he has given direct instruction to the clerk that we should continue.”
The investigation into the vetting chaos follows intense clashes at the Appointments Committee during recent ministerial nominee vettings, with tensions running high among MPs.
