Bagbin conspiring with NDC to create confusion – Afenyo – Markin

Majority Leader and Effutu Member of Parliament (MP), Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has accused Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin of conspiring with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority Caucus to create confusion in the House.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the Speaker deliberately avoided being served a writ regarding a petition aimed at declaring four parliamentary seats vacant. He claimed this move was a deliberate effort to serve the interests of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We have just witnessed a conspiracy between the Speaker and the Minority to bring confusion in the house,” Afenyo-Markin told journalists at Parliament on Thursday, October 17, 2024. He further expressed frustration, asserting that the Speaker had no authority to interpret the constitution on matters concerning the vacant seats, adding, “It is clear that Mr. Speaker avoided service of the writ to do the bidding of the NDC.”

The controversy centres around an ongoing legal tussle involving four parliamentary seats that the Majority claims were vacated.

The Effutu MP and his colleagues in the Majority Caucus feel that Speaker Bagbin’s actions undermine the judiciary’s role in resolving the matter, which is currently before the Supreme Court.

In response, Afenyo-Markin declared that the Majority Caucus would boycott parliamentary proceedings until the Supreme Court delivers a ruling on the issue.

This development adds to a growing list of tensions between the Majority and Minority in Ghana’s Parliament.

MyNewsGH.com earlier reported that Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has ruled that four seats in Parliament are declared vacant.

This comes on the back of a motion tabled by former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu who argued that the four members of Parliament are contesting the next election as Independent candidates.

The MPs affected by this decision are Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kojo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).
