Ghana’s Olympic dream of a sprint medal suffered a significant setback on Sunday (4 August) as Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu were eliminated from the men’s 100m semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Azamati, who had impressed in the heats with a time of 10.08 seconds, was unable to replicate his form in the semifinals.
Drawn in the same semi-final as world champion Noah Lyles, the Ghanaian clocked 10.17 seconds to finish ninth. Lyles advanced to the final alongside Jamaica’s Oblique Seville.
Saminu, meanwhile, improved slightly on his heat time, running 10.05 seconds in his semifinal group to beat world number four Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya, who ran a time of 10.08 seconds.
However, it was not enough to secure a spot in the final, as he finished seventh in the group, 0.92 seconds behind second-placed qualifier Fred Kerley of the United States.
Despite the disappointment, both athletes still have opportunities to shine at these Games.
Saminu will compete in the men’s 200m on Monday (5 August) at 17:55 GMT, while Azamati is part of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team, which will race on Thursday (8 August) at 9:35 GMT.
