Fresh elections needed in Ahafo Ano Constituencies, says Ashanti NDC legal team

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for a rerun of elections in the Ahafo Ano North and Ahafo Ano South West constituencies in the Ashanti Region, citing alleged irregularities and chaos during the collation of results.

According to Lawyer Evans Amankwah, a member of the NDC legal team, the integrity of the electoral process was compromised due to a lack of transparency and reported destruction of critical electoral materials.

He insists that these issues warrant fresh elections to uphold fairness and credibility.

“For Tepa, the Electoral Commission could not declare the presidential election results, claiming they lacked the pink sheets because they were vandalized by individuals in military uniform believed to be linked to the NPP. This is highly irregular and unacceptable. All that we are calling for is a rerun of the elections. If the worse comes and we need to go to court, we will do that”, Amankwah stated.

In Obuasi East, the party’s parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye, was declared the winner. However, the sitting MP, who initially conceded defeat, later claimed to have signed the declaration under duress.

“This is unacceptable,” Lawyer Amankwah stated. “If the MP believes something untoward occurred, he should seek redress in court rather than dragging the Electoral Commission (EC) into baseless claims.”

Background

Delays in the collation and declaration of results from the 2024 general election forced the Electoral Commission of Ghana to declare the winner of the presidential results, John Dramani Mahama without results from nine constituencies.

This delay, according to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, was because the collation centres of these constituencies were overwhelmed by political party supporters, which hindered the collation process.

Mrs Mensa confirmed, however, that despite the unavailability of those results, the overall outcome of the 2024 presidential election had been determined.

The nine constituencies are Awutu Senya East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Akwatia, Suhum, Techiman South, Dome-Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, Ahafo Ano North and Damango.

“The results from the 267 constituencies, including the newly created one, have conclusively established the winner,” she stated.
