Asante Kotoko on “cloud nine” after winning inaugural Democracy Cup

Kumasi-based Asante Kotoko secured victory in the maiden edition of the Democracy Cup as they beat archrivals Hearts of Oak on Wednesday (17 July) at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Porcupine Warriors sealed a 2-1 victory at full-time to continue their dominance over the Phobians in recent times in front of their fans.

Justice Blay opened the scoring for Kotoko via the penalty spot inside the 30th minute to hand the visitors an advantage, following a controversial penalty decision from the centre referee.

Kotoko should have had more in the opening half but settled for just one goal as the first half came to an end.

After recess, it was Hearts who struck first. Asamoah Boateng latched onto Dennis Korsah’s perfect curler into the penalty box to draw parity, giving hope to the home fans of a possible victory.

However, after another poor defensive display by the Phobians, Peter Amidu, restored Kotoko’s lead in the latter stages of the game to make the scoreline 2-1.

Despite several attempts from Hearts of Oak to equalise, the Porcupine Warriors run away with the win, sealing their third victory of the 2023/2024 season over the Phobians.

The victory sees Kotoko not only make history by claiming the inaugural Democracy Cup but also claim the ticket to face DC United in a friendly game later this year.
