Armed robbery in West Mamprusi: Two injured, assemblyman calls for police action

Two drivers, Felix Amankwa Appiah and Mba Karim Salifu, were victims of an armed robbery on Sunday (22 September), while travelling between Sariba and Nabari in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region

The incident occurred between 7pm and 8pm as they were en route to Walewale with other passengers.

Both drivers sustained injuries during the attack; Appiah suffered finger wounds, while Salifu was critically injured in the back and subsequently transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

Appiah recounted the harrowing experience to Asaase News, explaining that a woman had asked him to transport goods, which raised his suspicions about potential robbery due to the valuable cargo.

“There was a certain woman who came to Walewale market and said, They are bean farmers so they have money and they bought things,” he said.

“I had some feelings, driving experience feelings so I told my brother that armed robbers maybe on the road because the goods that we are carrying are more expensive. From our way coming back to Walewale, armed robbers attacked us.”

The incident has raised alarm over the increasing robberies in the area. Jacob Nluki Jnr, assemblyman for the Kpasenkpe electoral area, called for the establishment of police stations and checkpoints to address the growing threat.

“Not only this armed robbery, [the problem] has started for a long time [and] it has even sent people to their graves,” he stated, urging local authorities and the government to take action.

The assemblyyman said despite efforts to secure a police station has been slow. “We have made follow ups to the various authorities who will be able to help us get this police station but it has not yet come to pass,” Nluki added.

“I just want to stand as the assembly member to appeal to the government and also my municipal chief executive and municipal police commander to help us make this a reality.”
