Ahafo Region: Newmont unveils CAT underground loader machine to reduce emissions

In a bid to reduce the effects of climate change through a reduction in carbon emissions and ensure energy efficiency, Newmont Africa has taken bold step to unveil the Caterpillar (CAT)  R2900 XE diesel-electric Underground Loader for its Subika underground operation at the Ahafo South in the Ahafo Region.

The machine valued at US$18 million is one of five to be procured by Newmont by 2026 and it is the first in Ghana and Africa.

Speaking in an interview, the general manager of Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine, Alex Kofi Annin said, “The CAT R2900 XE Underground Loader will help reduce emissions by about 31% to complement Newmont’s zero carbon emissions by the year 2050 objective.”

Annin further explained that the CAT machine is a game changer and will help Ghana reduce its carbon footprint underground and generally “create a conducive environment for our underground employees as well as making Ghana a green country.”

Annin also revealed that Newmont has entered into a US$100 million strategic alliance with CAT to build a comprehensive mining system that will encompass autonomous haulage fleets and other technologies for both open and underground operations.

The Managing Director of Mantrac Ghana, Steven Scott who handed over the machine has said that the CAT R2900 XE machine will help increase production while using less fuel.

According to Scott, Mantrac will be employing about 450 Ghanaians at the three Newmont sites in the country by the end of 2024.
