Ghana’s quest to nurture the next generation of women’s footballing talent got underway on Monday (15 July) with the inaugural Elite U-15 Girls Championship.
The ten-day tournament, held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, is a key part of the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) implementation of FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme (TDS).
It aims to identify and develop the brightest young female players from across the country.
Top prospects from all ten GFA Regional Football Associations (RFA) are competing, with the opening day showcasing some impressive individual performances.
Ashanti Region stole the show in Group A’s opening match, securing a convincing 2-0 victory over Eastern Region.
Keziah Ekua Asantewaa emerged as the star of the game, bagging a brace for the Ashanti outfit.
Elsewhere in Group A, a tense encounter between the Northern Region and the Upper East Region went all the way to penalties after a goalless draw.
Northern Region emerged victorious 6-5 in the shootout.
Group B also saw some close contests, with Greater Accra edging Upper West 1-0 thanks to a Saidatu Wahab goal.
Brong Ahafo Region dominated their clash with Volta Region, with Gifty Agyeiwaa Jnr. netting a hat-trick in their 3-1 triumph. The only consolation for Volta Region came via Abigail Owusuaa’s strike.
The final game of the day saw Central Region claim a narrow 1-0 victory over Western Region courtesy of Martha Benewaa’s effort.
However, this match was a pre-arranged warm-up fixture, as both teams were on standby in their respective groups and won’t receive points for the result.
The Elite U-15 Girls Championship continues on Wednesday (17 July) at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence.
