Afenyo-Markin appointed chairman of ECG, Annor Dompreh chairs Road Fund board

Majority Leader and member of Parliament for Effutu constituency in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has been appointed as chairman of the board of directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following the resignation of Herbert Krapa from the role.

The appointment is contained in a letter dated 16 July 2024, signed by Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, and addressed to the Minister of Energy.

“The President of the Republic has nominated Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin (MP.), Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (the “Company.”

“Kindly take the necessary steps to give effect to the President’s nomination in accordance with the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992) and the Regulations of the Company,” the letter read.

Afenyo-Markin takes over the ECG board chair position from Herbert Krapa who has assumed the office of Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy following his nomination by President Akufo-Addo and his subsequent approval by Parliament to the elevated office from his previous position as deputy minister for energy.

Until his new appointment, Afenyo-Markin was the board chairman of the Ghana Road Fund. As a result of his latest role, the Majority Chief Whip, Annor Dompreh, will take over as the board chairman of the Ghana Road Fund. Mr Dompreh will subsequently step down from being a member of the ECG board and the role will be taken over by the Deputy Majority Whip in Parliament, Habib Iddrisu.

Mr Krapa, a lawyer, after taking office as board chair of ECG on Tuesday, 9 April 2024, remained in office as Deputy Minister for Energy until his resignation this week. He took over as board chair of ECG during a challenging period but managed to restore stable power supply in the country.

Afenyo-Markin takes over the job at a time when electricity consumers are enjoying relative stability in electricity supply. Together with his colleague board members, they are expected to give direction to the staff and management of ECG to ensure that power supply in the country remains intact.
