Abolition E-Levy: It’ll be unwise for Mahama’s gov’t not to scrap it – Dr Theo Acheampong

Commercially-oriented energy economist and political risk analyst Dr. Theo Acheampong is of the view that it will be unwise if the government keeps E-levy and COVID-19 levy.

However, his challenge has been the question of when the abolishing is going to take place.

To him, both E-Levy and COVID-19 levy account for less than USD 300 million or 0.4% of yearly GDP and therefore can be done away with to bring the needed relief to the people of Ghana.

He believes that there are several ways that the money these levies bring can be recouped.

Making his point known in a post shared via social media, he said “Both e-levy and COVID-19 levy will go! It’s not a question of if but when. Will most likely will be announced in the first budget statement of the administration. Together they account for less than USD 300 million or 0.4% of yearly GDP. We can forego that and bring major relief to Ghanaians; it’ll be politically unwise for the new administration not to scrap at least these two taxes. That money can be recouped in other ways — e.g. efficiency savings/value for money contracting, cut back on size of government”.
