2030, 2034 FIFA World Cup hosts announced

FIFA has officially named the hosts for the 2030 and 2034 Men’s World Cups, with Spain, Portugal, and Morocco set to jointly host the 2030 tournament, and Saudi Arabia confirmed as the venue for the 2034 edition.

The announcement was made during a vote at the Extraordinary FIFA Congress on Wednesday (11 December).

In a nod to the competition’s history, three matches in the 2030 tournament will be played in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, marking 100 years since the first World Cup.

The decision to award the World Cup to these nations, however, was largely expected, as both bids were the only contenders for their respective editions.

Despite the apparent lack of competition, the bidding process was not without controversy.

The Saudi Arabian bid, in particular, attracted significant scrutiny due to the country’s human rights record.

The Swiss FA, ahead of the vote, urged FIFA to ensure that human rights issues in Saudi Arabia are closely monitored by both the organisation and the International Labour Organisation.

Amnesty International has been vocal in its condemnation, with Steve Cockburn, head of labour rights and sport, accusing FIFA of “reckless” decision-making.

“FIFA’s reckless decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia without ensuring adequate human rights protections are in place will put many lives at risk,” Cockburn stated.

“Based on clear evidence to date, FIFA knows workers will be exploited and even die without fundamental reforms in Saudi Arabia, and yet has chosen to press ahead regardless.”

The Football Supporters’ Association also expressed concern, highlighting fears over the fan experience, particularly in Saudi Arabia, where cultural and logistical challenges are expected.

In response to the backlash, FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the decision, insisting that the organisation trusts the hosts to address these concerns.

“We are aware of critics and fears and I fully trust our hosts to address all open points,” Infantino said.

“We have a transparency that will shape real and lasting change. That is what we expect and what we look forward to—social improvements and positive human rights impacts.”

“That is one of the responsibilities of hosting a World Cup, and the world will of course be watching.”

With FIFA’s controversial decisions now official, all eyes will be on the 2030 and 2034 World Cups as the global football community grapples with the ongoing human rights concerns.
