2024 National Chess Championships kicks off 27 December

The Ghana Chess Association (GCA) has revealed that the highly anticipated 2024 National Chess Championship will run from 27 December 2024 to 5 January 2025 at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) in Accra.

The championship, which determines the national champions in both the open and women’s categories, promises a fierce battle of strategy and skill.

Divided into two distinct phases, it will showcase Ghana’s finest chess talents vying for the prestigious titles.

From 27-29 December, the spotlight will be on the open category as top players compete for one of five coveted slots in the final phase.

This stage, hosted at the GCPS, will see some of the nation’s best minds clash in high-stakes games.

These five qualifiers will then join Ghana’s top five FIDE-ranked players (as of 1 December 2024) in Phase Two, setting the stage for an electrifying contest for the ultimate crown.

The open category continues from 2-5 January 2025, while the women’s category runs from 3-5 January.

All eyes will be on 2023 champions Candidate Master (CM) Kwabena Adu-Poku and Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Gertrude Banini, who will face determined challengers looking to claim their crowns.

Registration for the championship is now open. Paid-up members of the GCA, women, and participants under 18 years will pay GHC250 to compete, while other entrants will be charged GHC350.
