Highlife star Kuami Eugene has laid bare the challenges Ghanaian musicians face in their quest for global recognition, asserting that winning a Grammy Award requires more than just talent—it demands connections.
The award-winning songwriter and producer, born Eugene Kwame Marfo, shared his thoughts during an interview with Cape Coast-based Property FM.
“We are now taking baby steps,” he admitted, emphasising the uphill battle for Ghanaian artistes aiming for international acclaim.
Eugene pointed out the financial strain musicians endure just to get airplay in Ghana, revealing that even promoting a single track often requires hefty investments.
“When we talk about the Grammys, we ought to know that we are now taking baby steps and even in Ghana, promoting a song demands an artiste to pay for promo,” he said.
For Kuami Eugene, the road to Grammy success is fraught with obstacles. “How do you expect us to move from here straight to the Grammys when people demand payment before our songs are played on the airwaves?” He asked.
“When we start these Grammy conversations, it will take so much for a Ghanaian to win at the Grammys because you have to gather the masses.”
Despite these challenges, Kuami Eugene’s career is making strides globally. His record label, Rockstar Records, recently signed a deal with Ditto Music, a UK-based distribution and label services company with ties to the US music market.
The partnership, which could amplify his reach, signals a step forward for the young artist and perhaps a glimmer of hope for others navigating Ghana’s music industry hurdles.
