A report launched by the Ghana Statistical Service which studied prices of foodstuff over a 14-month window has found the Western North and the Upper West Regions as the most expensive and the cheapest respectively.
The GSS report studied 10 foodstuff such as bread, beans, yam, noodles, cooking oil, tomato paste, milk, beef, iodated salt and imported rice which were the most expensive for consumers.
The report which covered the period of January 2023 to February 2024 said the factors that cause variations in prices over time and across geographic areas were transportation cost, local production expenses, supply chain disruptions, and seasonal fluctuations.
The report dubbed the Food Price Variability is the second by GSS and was launched last week at the Accra Technical University (ATU), revealing significant differences in food prices across the country with the Western North Region being Ghana’s most expensive food region across the 16 administrative regions of Ghana over the 14-month period studied.
The report was launched by the Deputy Government Statistician, Dr Faustina Frempong-Ainguah, with Prof. Ernest C. Winful, Dean, International Programmes and Institutional Cooperation of ATU, and Prof. Alice Constance Mensah, Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences, ATU all in attendance.
The analysis of the report showed that greater price variations, generally existed within regions rather than across regions.
The report showed that commodities with standard packaging had less price variations across the regions, suggesting that adherence to standard metric could help stabilize prices and food inflation in the country.
