Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to initiate processes to have metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives( MMDCEs) elected as part of his strategies to provide good governance.
MMDCES are appointed by the President as the 1992 Constitution stipulates. But governance experts have argued that electing them will promote better accountability outcomes and ultimately good governance. Attempts by the Akufo-Addo administration to get them elected have stalled.
But speaking at the 2024 NPP Manifesto Launch in Takoradi, Dr Bawumia pledged to reinitiate processes to have them elected by universal adult suffrage.
“In the area of governance,, we will cap the number of ministers at 50 and reinitiate the Process of getting MMDCEs elected through a universal adult suffrage to deepen decentralisation and effective Local Governance,” he said.
Dr Bawumia urged Ghanaians to give him the mandate to lead Ghana come December 7, 2024 so that he can transform the country and improve upon the gains made under the leadership of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
