The aftermath of the December 7 elections has been a moment of reflection for many within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with some members expressing disappointment over the unexpected outcome.
One such figure is Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, who has openly shared his thoughts on the party’s performance and the internal struggles that contributed to its defeat.
In an interview on Lawson TV, Assafuah revealed that despite the NPP’s best efforts in Tafo, which has a voter base of around 34,000, things didn’t go as planned.
“Tafo has around 34,000 voters, but we distributed over 40,000 t-shirts,” he said, reflecting on the massive efforts that were put into the campaign.
“Despite having more than enough paraphernalia, it caused more problems than if we hadn’t distributed them at all.”
The former minister did not shy away from addressing a core issue that he believes plagued the party’s efforts.
“The problem we faced, Senior, is that no one can claim the NPP didn’t perform well – that’s simply not true.
The issue was that the expectations of our people weren’t met, especially those who have been loyal to the NPP for many years but received nothing in return,” he said.
For Assafuah, the frustration felt by party loyalists was palpable. Many had worked tirelessly for the NPP, hoping that their support would be recognized in tangible ways.
“I understand their pain and agree with their frustration,” he admitted. The reality of unmet expectations became a significant factor in the loss, leaving party supporters disillusioned.
Despite acknowledging the dissatisfaction, Assafuah remained optimistic. “I was hopeful they would be patient, believing that after the NPP’s victory in the December 7 election, they would be rewarded,” he said.
However, in light of the unexpected results, Assafuah now sees the importance of addressing these concerns head-on.
