Victor Owusu, secretary to the Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Council of Elders, has expressed confidence that the peace agreement recently brokered in the Offinso North constituency will have lasting effects.

The Council of Elders announced on Thursday (22 August) that it had successfully mediated a resolution between factions within the constituency.

The agreement followed a meeting on Wednesday (21 August) involving key figures such as NPP parliamentary candidate Fred Kyei Asamoah and constituency chairman Johnson Modma.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Friday (23 August), Owusu emphasised that the council’s approach—allowing all parties to voice their grievances—was crucial in achieving reconciliation.

“I believe that this resolution will be permanent because we gave the opportunity to the feuding parties to pour out their grievances,” Owusu said. “At the end of the day, the people were reconciled because we created a platform for them to air their grievances.”

Owusu also highlighted the importance of unity within the constituency, stressing that any disunity could jeopardise the party’s chances in the upcoming general election.

“Offinso North is a marginal seat for us; there’s a very strong NDC presence over there; we have struggled in the last elections to maintain the seat, so any semblance of disunity within us will not be good for us,” he warned.

He added, “That’s why we went with all strength to make sure that we stay united, get their grievances resolved and then tell the people, tell the stakeholders, tell the coordinators [and] tell the executives that unity is paramount in the pursuit of our presidential and parliamentary admissions come 7 December 2024.”
