Marshall of Parliament, Lt. Col. Samuel Kofi Ofosu (Rtd), has shared his account of the events that unfolded on the night of Thursday, January 30, 2025, during the ministerial vetting.
Read his narration below:
‘Minutes before the chaos erupted, I was outside the Committee room, managing the crowd and visitors who had accompanied the ministerial nominees. The number of people present was overwhelming—far more than we could handle,’ he testified before the Adhoc Committee investigating the disturbances.
‘While I was controlling the crowd, I suddenly heard shouts and altercations coming from the Committee room. I rushed inside to assess the situation, and upon arrival, I saw two honourable members locked in a tense confrontation. I quickly moved through the crowd and separated them, attempting to guide one back to his seat.’
‘Just as I was about to escort the MP to his seat, I noticed that some members had begun raising chairs onto the vetting table, while others were forcibly dragging tables and even removing the legs of one.’
‘Recognizing the growing chaos, I moved closer to the Chairman of the Committee to offer him protection from any unforeseen harm. By the time we got there, chairs had been placed on the table, some MPs were on their feet, and others were pushing and pulling the tables.’
‘In the midst of the disorder, I saw the Majority and Minority leaders engaged in a discussion, seemingly trying to restore calm. After their conversation, the Majority Leader returned to address the Committee, but the microphones had been damaged, making it impossible for the proceedings to continue. As a result, the sitting had to be adjourned.’
‘Following the adjournment, MPs were escorted from the Chamber to their respective offices. The Majority and Minority Leaders had stepped outside for further consultation, and by the time they returned, one of the tables in the corner had been lifted. We tried to bring it back down, but before we could act, the legs had been forcibly removed.’
‘That table was eventually carried outside, and when the Majority Leader attempted to calm tempers, he was unable to speak through the console because some of the equipment had been damaged. We quickly advised him that the consoles were not functioning.'”
