Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, Kennedy Osei Nyarko is of the view that members of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) voted massively for the strike action not because they care about the country and the fight against illegal mining.
Rather, they are in favour of the academic year starting in January hence their strong stance on the call for a strike.
In a Facebook post, he could not fathom the fuss about the strike.
UTAG’s NEC has voted that they strike to drum home the need to end illegal mining in Ghana.
The decision comes after Organized Labour suspended their strike action after their meeting with the president of Ghana.
The President in a statement issued on October 10,2024 reaffirmed his commitment to fighting illegal mining.
He outlined measures put in place by government to ensure that mining in water bodies and forest reserves become a thing of the past.
