Comedian and singer Nasboi appeared on the Honest Brunch podcast, hosted by Nedu Wazobia, and shared personal insights into his life, upbringing, and views on religion.
During the conversation, Nasboi didn’t hold back when discussing his skepticism toward modern-day pastors, revealing a series of uncomfortable experiences that have shaped his perspective.
Growing up in a religious household, Nasboi admitted that his faith has always been important to him. However, as he got older, he became increasingly disillusioned by what he sees as the manipulative practices of some pastors today.
“I’ve always been uncomfortable with how they exploit people’s fears,” he shared with a sense of frustration. “It’s like they prey on the vulnerable, telling them things that feed into their anxieties, just to get more money.”
Nasboi recalled how his mother, in her desire for spiritual protection for her family, would often request prayers from pastors on his behalf.
But there was a catch—she would use the money Nasboi gave her for other things to buy tithes and offerings to present to these pastors. “I’d give her money, and she’d go to the pastors to pray for me,” he said.
“But each time, they’d tell her that I’m at risk of dying soon. And that, of course, would lead to her asking for more money for more prayers. It became a vicious cycle.”
As he shared this experience, Nasboi’s voice grew more pointed. “They’ve ‘killed’ me so many times, figuratively speaking.
“It’s always about me being on the verge of death, unless I pay for their intercession. It’s manipulative, and honestly, I’m done with it.”
He stressed that while he respects the genuine faith some people find in their pastors, his personal experiences have led him to steer clear of any direct engagement with them.
