There was less opportunities - Abdul Fatawu Issahaku opens up on early struggle in Europe

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku says the lack of trust and belief from coaches during the start of his career in Europe is the reason behind his early struggles.

The promising winger emerged as the star for the Black Satellites after winning the U-20 African Youth Championship.

Issahaku was named Player of the Tournament accolade after helping Ghana secure its fourth youth continental trophy.

The 20-year-old subsequently joined Dreams FC before joining Sporting CP in 2022.

However, his opportunities to showcase his talent were limited at Sporting Lisbon, as he was often relegated to the youth side, making just 12 appearances for the first team.

In August 2023, Issahaku joined Leicester City, under the management of Enzo Maresca, who brought him to the King Power Stadium to strengthen their squad in their bid for Premier League promotion.

Under Maresca, Issahaku, 20, experienced a resurgence, contributing 19 goals to help Leicester secure their return to the Premier League.

Reflecting on his journey, Issahaku revealed that the lack of opportunities early in his career hindered his progress, but being given a chance at Leicester allowed his talent to shine.

“I think sometimes I don’t think it was bad but it was because the opportunity was not there but when I got the opportunity, I got more confident that was why it was more easier to put out what I got,” he said.

The forward was also full of praise for what now Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca did for him.

“I think it’s just the confidence he gave me on the field, how he guided me during the league and everything,” he added.

With Leicester securing the services of Issahaku, the forward is aiming to replicate last season’s form in the Premier League.
