The rise of Ghana’s music giants: Top 10 artists making waves

Ghana‘s music scene has experienced a remarkable transformation in recent years, with a new generation of talented artists taking centre stage.

 From Afrobeats to Highlife, these musicians have captivated audiences with their unique sounds, styles, and energy.

When a foreigner thinks of Ghanaian music, they think of Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, and Sarkodie, but there are other artists who are breaking down barriers and pushing boundaries, and their impact on Ghanaian music and culture will undoubtedly be felt for years.

Here, we highlight the emergence of Ghana’s top five musicians, who are redefining the country’s music landscape.

KiDi

KiDi, born Dennis Nana Dwamena, has quickly become a household name in Ghana. His soulful voice and versatility in blending Afrobeats, R&B, and highlife have endeared him to fans. Hits like “Faky3 Me” and “Say Cheese” showcase his impressive vocal range and skilful storytelling.

Kuami Eugene 

Dubbed the “Rockstar,” Kuami Eugene has revolutionised Ghanaian music with his fusion of afrobeats, rock, and highlife. His powerful vocals and electrifying live performances have earned him a massive following. Chart-topping singles like “Angela” and “Wish Me Well” demonstrate his innovative approach to music.

Asakaa Boys

They are  a music group from Ghana comprising  O’Kenneth, Jay Bahd, Kawabanga, Cedi City Boy, Reggie, Kwaku DMC, Sean Lifer, Rabby Jones, and Braa Benk.  Raised in Kumasi, Asakaa’s music embodies their community as well as his early exposure to foreign music, which has culminated in the artist’s fourth studio project, Most High. And despite the language barriers, the Asakaa boys continue to capture ever more non-Twi-speaking audiences with their work. The recent Grammy addition of a Ghanaian Drill award in the Best African Music Performance Category speaks to that. “The Grammys just recognised Asakaa, which means it’s getting bigger. Asakaa’s for the whole of Ghana and Africa.

King Patuta

With so many ups and downs in his career, there was no sign this young man was giving up on his dreams till they were accomplished.

He had his first demo somewhere in 2004. And because of financial constraints, he wasn’t able to record any tracks again until 2008, which was almost 4 years later.

It was then that he met Abismall and Owuraku (Phills Bright). These two started giving him studio exposure. They gave him the chance to be featured on their tracks.

But, as serious as he is, he never sleeps on his dreams. From 2007 through 2011, the King was involved in street rap battles. These battles got him great publicity after he kept on knocking people down with lyrical punches. The best part of it is that he will steal your fans and take the money at stake too.

King promise

King Promise spontaneously joined his friend’s studio session and that’s when his curiosity and talent were ignited. He started developing his unique sound, writing his own songs, and collaborating with producers. I1n his final year of high school, his headmaster overheard him singing in class and encouraged him to join the school choir for his last term. When he was almost finished his university, things took a turn for him.

In 2017, he officially released his music, starting with SoundCloud and eventually expanding to all streaming services. As word spread and local buzz grew, Promise’s fan base started to grow as well. “Terminator” is his most-viewed song on YouTube, with over 19 million views. He is currently sitting at number nine. King Promise continues to captivate listeners with his amazing voice and heartfelt music.

Kofi Kinaata

Kofi Kinaata is a Ghanaian musician and songwriter. He rose to fame with his hit song “Susuka,” which showcased his ability to blend highlife and hip-life genres. The song is currently his most viewed song on YouTube, with over 10 million views. Kofi Kinaata’s music often carries social messages and addresses various societal issues. Some of his popular songs include “Confession,” “Things Fall Apart,” and “Behind the Scenes.”

His lyrical prowess and catchy melodies have earned him numerous awards and a dedicated fan base. Kofi Kinaata continues to make waves in the Ghanaian music industry, and his music resonates with people from all walks of life.

Raphael Camidoh Kofi Attachie has been passionate about music from a young age and now he is one of the three top musicians in the country. Camidoh’s musical journey began when he participated in the MTN Hit Maker reality show in 2016, where he showcased his exceptional vocal abilities and songwriting skills. Although he didn’t win the competition, it served as a platform for him to gain recognition and launch his music career.

Known for his smooth and soulful voice, Camidoh has released several popular songs, including “For My Lover” and “Maria.” His most popular song is the “Sugarcane” remix which has over 84 million views. This song features  Mayorkun, King Promise, and Darkoo.

His music is a fusion of Afro beats, highlife, and R&B, creating a unique and captivating sound. Camidoh has collaborated with various artists in the Ghanaian music industry and continues to gain popularity both locally and internationally. His talent and dedication have earned him nominations for several awards, including the Ghana Music Awards.

Gyakie

Gyakie’s musical journey began at a young age, as she comes from a family rooted in music. Her father, Nana Acheampong, is a well-known Ghanaian highlife musician and Gyakie joined him in the studio when she was just 8 years old. As she grew up, Gyakie found inspiration in artists like Asa and r2bees. Despite her young age, she has already made a significant impact in the music industry.

In fact, she is currently the top female artist in Ghana and the second artist in Ghana. One of her most popular songs, “Forever,” became a viral sensation, especially on social media platforms like TikTok. The song has amassed over 55 million views on YouTube, showcasing Gyakie’s incredible talent and captivating music. It’s amazing to see Gyakie’s rise to success and the widespread popularity of her music. She is undoubtedly making a name for herself in the Ghanaian music scene and beyond.

Black Sherif

Black Sherif is a rising Ghanaian artist who captivates audiences with his distinctive sound and storytelling lyrics. His music blends Afrobeat rhythms with compelling narratives, resonating with listeners across the globe.

He has released several popular songs. Kwaku the Traveller is his most-viewed song, with over 25 million views. Black Sherif has won several awards throughout his career, including multiple Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, 3Music Awards and Ghana Music Awards.

Black Sheriff’s rise in the music scene reflects his dedication and passion for his craft, earning him a loyal following. As he continues to make waves in the industry, his impact on the music landscape is undeniable, solidifying his place as a standout artist to watch.

Amerado

After placing third at the Solid FM Freestyle Show in 2015, Amerado caught the attention of music producer, sound engineer and A&R, Azee Ntwene, who signed the rapper to his label, MicBurnerz Music. Amerado was featured on a song by Mix Master Garzy intended to promote peace around the 2016 Ghanaian general election. The following year, Amerado released his first single, I AM, which Pulse Ghana included among their top 10 Ghanaian songs in January 2017. He released his first EP, Rapmare, that November. In 2018, Amerado was featured on Sarkodie’s hip-hop song “Biibi Ba,” which was nominated for the Best Hip-Hop Song at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

Jay Bahd


The Condem hitmaker makes our number 4 spot . Jay Bahd is a Santasi based rapper and a Kumerican rep , His song “Condem” shot him into the airwaves, as he is getting many streams and listening on all music platforms. Jay Bahd is also known as an Asakaa boy. Jay Bahd has just released his EP called “The Return of Okomfo Anokye, which is gaining many streams.
