The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has demanded a parliamentary inquiry into the disappearance of an 11-strong Ghanaian para-athlete team in Norway.
The group, which included athletes, coaches, and support staff, travelled to Oslo in July under the pretence of competing in the Fjordkraft Bergen City Marathon. However, they vanished upon arrival, prompting a national outcry.
While the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and the National Paralympic Committee-Ghana (NPC) have denied involvement, the NPC president, Samson Deen, has alleged that the perpetrators forged documents to secure visas.
In a statement, SWAG president Kwabena Yeboah described the incident as “a blatant fraud” that has damaged Ghana’s reputation and undermined the efforts of genuine athletes.
SWAG also accused successive governments of failing to tackle systemic corruption in sports. “This scandal is another glaring example of systemic fraud within our sports sector, exacerbated by the lack of political will and decisive action in addressing such issues,” the statement read.
“This has unfortunately created a culture of impunity, where fraudulent individuals exploit the system with little fear of repercussions.”
SWAG highlighted the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games visa scandal as evidence of the government’s inaction and called for swift and decisive action to bring those responsible to justice.
“The failure to prosecute and hold offenders accountable has emboldened fraudsters within the sports federations, leading to repeated scandals that threaten the integrity of Ghanaian sports on the global stage and jeopardise the future of our athletes.”
