The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), has unveiled the Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan, aimed at countering climate change and its consequences within the metropolis.
This comprehensive document details Sekondi-Takoradi’s strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing clean energy availability, building climate resilience, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
This SEACAP document is a collaborative output of STMA and Covenant of Mayors in sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA), with technical assistance from PSS Urbania, who conducted a detailed review of climate change data and engaged with households and stakeholders to inform its preparation.
In Ghana, the CoM SSA project is supported through joint funding from the European Union and BMZ, the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, with implementation services delivered by GIZ.
Abdul-Mumin Issah, Sekondi-Takoradi metropolitan chief executive, emphasised during the SEACAP document launch in Takoradi that climate change constitutes a pressing global concern with far-reaching consequences, prompting the Assembly to implement decisive measures to address this critical issue.
As he noted, research conducted during the document’s preparation phase indicated that greenhouse gas emissions per capita in Sekondi-Takoradi were 26% of the worldwide average.
The MCE observed that these emissions stem from three primary sectors, specifically; 56 percent from stationary sources, 31% from waste, and 13% from mobile sources.
Issah noted that the study’s findings indicate a potential 40 per cent surge in Sekondi-Takoradi’s greenhouse gas emissions within the next decade, absent immediate and sustained intervention.
He emphasised that SEACAP would provide a strategic framework for sustainable and effective action, grounded in three core pillars: climate mitigation, adaptation, and sustainable energy access.
He also emphasised that the document would provide a comprehensive framework for the Assembly to develop Sekondi-Takoradi into a modern, sustainable, and competitive city, leveraging low-carbon transportation systems, effective waste management strategies, and renewable energy sources to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Issah pledged that the STMA would utilise all available resources to fulfill the SEACAP’s objectives, ensuring Sekondi-Takoradi emerges as a sustainable city for all residents.
He thanked CoM SSA/GIZ for their assistance in creating the STMA’s SEACAP document, remarking, “The partnership with CoM SSA has galvanized our determination to deliver outstanding outcomes.” Dr Dirk Assman, GIZ Ghana Country Director, observed that the document’s launch marks significant progress in STMA’s efforts to address climate change in Sekondi-Takoradi.
He remarked, “Climate change persists as a paramount urban concern, and through SEACAP, STMA showcases the potential for local actions to drive meaningful global change.”
He stated that the STMA’s objectives align closely with GIZ’s and the European Union’s goals in Ghana, and they are dedicated to collaborative efforts to achieve the outlined targets, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for all.
Western regional minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, extended congratulations to the STMA through a representative’s speech, commending their pioneering efforts in combating climate change within the Metropolis and the broader region.
Shea O’Neil, country manager for CoM SSA in Ghana, expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the STMA to develop the SEACAP document, addressing climate change concerns within the Metropolis.
