Four persons are in the grips of the police for engaging in illegally mining on the Pra river in the Twifo Ati – Morkwa district in the Central region.
The equipment, structures and other operational materials including chanfans and water pumps were completely destroyed by the District Security Council (DISEC) to act as deterrent to other recalcitrant persons.
The swoop was conducted by Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi, the DCE of the area the police, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other members of the security council.
Agyemang Nyantakyi indicated that the operation was carried out on the River Pra to crush “nation wreckers” polluting water bodies and indiscriminately destroying plant life in the district, adding that “posterity will be the long-term beneficiary.”
The DCE emphasised the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining but acknowledged the need for more support to achieve the goal.
He re-echoed the government’s commitment in the fight against galamsey, citing logistical challenges, including the lack of life jackets and speedboats, as the setbacks of the assembly in pursuing illegal miners on river bodies.
The DCE appealed to all Ghanaians, particularly those dependent on River Pra, to join the fight against galamsey attributing the frequent flooding in the district to galamsey activities along riverbanks and in residential areas.
