Stephen Yakubu urges voters to ‘put Humu Awudu in parliament’

The Upper West Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has called on party faithful to intensify grassroots mobilisation in a bid to secure victory for Humu Awudu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Wa Central.

Addressing a crowd of enthusiastic supporters, Yakubu stressed the need for proactive engagement, urging them to go beyond mere participation and actively campaign for Awudu in the run-up to the 7 December elections.

“I can see that you’re hyped up; I can see that you’re ready to work,” he told the crowd. “What we need to do is to put Hajia [Awudu] in parliament.”

“From today, we need to knock on people’s doors, go from house to house, and encourage everyone to vote for her.”

The minister, conscious of the high stakes, warned against complacency, stressing that the party’s success hinges not just on individual votes but on sustained efforts to turn out the electorate in Awudu’s favour.

Yakubu did not hold back in his critique of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, who has held the Wa Central seat since 2005.

He questioned the MP’s long tenure and its impact on the constituency, arguing that despite the incumbent’s personal advancements, little has been done to improve the lives of ordinary constituents.

“How do you keep someone [19] years in one position, and he’s not doing anything for you?” Yakubu challenged, adding, “He has gone to improve himself, but not you.”

Amid growing discontent among some NPP members who feel their loyalty has gone unrecognised, Yakubu sought to reassure them that a victory for Awudu could open up opportunities for the party’s rank and file.

“Today, you may not have a job,” he acknowledged, “but if you put Hajia [Awudu] in parliament, tomorrow you might.”

He linked Awudu’s campaign to the NPP’s broader strategy of securing the presidency, arguing that parliamentary victories are crucial in influencing national political appointments.

“If you vote for Dr. [Mahamudu] Bawumia [as president],” he told the gathering, “he’s going to make your MP a minister.”

The rally in Wa Central is part of a larger effort by the NPP to consolidate support in traditionally contested constituencies, as the party eyes both parliamentary seats and the presidency in the upcoming elections.
