St. Theresa’s Hospital in Nandom, Upper West Region, has made an urgent appeal to the government to adjust outdated National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) tariffs to reflect current market realities.
The call was made by the medical superintendent, Dr. Sebastian Yidana, during the hospital’s Open Day celebration under the theme, “Achieving Excellence in Healthcare Delivery: A Shared Responsibility.”
Speaking passionately about the hospital’s financial and operational struggles, Dr. Yidana highlighted the mounting pressure on healthcare facilities following a July 2023 directive mandating them to cover their electricity bills.
For St. Theresa’s Hospital, this translates to a staggering GHC40,000 every month.
To keep operations afloat, the hospital has introduced innovative measures, including a ward fund, but Dr. Yidana warned that without government intervention, sustaining quality healthcare delivery would be increasingly difficult.
He outlined the hospital’s pressing needs, ranging from critical equipment like X-rays and 3D/4D ultrasound machines to anaesthesia devices and patient monitors.
Dr. Yidana also appealed for additional beds and improved staffing from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and resources to complete the hospital’s theatre and improve internal roads.
Encroachment on the hospital’s land remains another challenge. Dr. Yidana urged the traditional council and municipal assembly to take swift action to protect the hospital’s property.
In his address, he encouraged the community to ensure their NHIS cards remain active to access affordable healthcare.
The Open Day celebration served as a platform for dialogue among stakeholders, reflecting on the hospital’s achievements while addressing shared responsibilities to achieve healthcare excellence.
