Show leadership, not party gains- Senyo Hosi calls out Akufo-Addo over Galamsey crisis

In a passionate address, Senyo Hosi, the Convener of the One Ghana Movement, made his frustration clear about President Nana Akufo-Addo’s handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

With the environmental devastation continuing to plague communities, Hosi’s message reflected the deep disappointment felt by many Ghanaians who have been watching their rivers, forests, and lands slowly destroyed.

“You have failed us, Nana Addo. Wake up to your responsibilities and not for your party gains. Please, do something that will make a lasting legacy for you and your generation. Wake up and show leadership. That is what is required of you, President,” Hosi declared with urgency on Tv3, monitored by MyNewsGH.com

Illegal mining has been a thorn in the side of Ghana for decades. What began as small-scale artisanal mining has spiraled into a large-scale environmental catastrophe. Rivers like the Pra, which once supported whole communities with fresh water and fish, are now contaminated with mercury and other toxic chemicals.

Once fertile farmlands have been stripped bare, rendering them useless. For the families who live in these areas, galamsey isn’t just an environmental issue—it’s an existential crisis.

Meanwhile, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has launched “Operation Halt” as one of the steps to address the galamsey menace.

On October 7, 2024, Organised Labour issued a press release demanding an immediate halt to illegal mining activities, particularly around water bodies and forest reserves.

In response, the President communicated his commitment to tackling this issue through a letter dated October 9, 2024.

The President’s letter outlined specific measures aimed at curbing illegal mining and protecting the country’s natural resources.
