About 350 police personnel and 36 military officers have been deployed to Walewale to ensure a peaceful election as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) selects a parliamentary candidate for the 7 December election.
The rerun of the election was ordered by the Tamale High Court on Monday (2 September 2024). The court is expected to deliver its reason on 12 September 2024.
The venue for the election has been changed twice; first from Walewale Senior High Technical School to the Walewale Astro Turf due to ongoing exams, and then to the Pentecostal Church this morning.
The deployment of security personnel is a response to tensions between supporters of the two candidates.
The election, originally set to begin at 7am and end at 2pm has been delayed due to the venue change and other organizational issues. As of the time of filing this report, the election was yet to commence.
About 842 delegates are expected to cast their votes to elect a parliamentary candidate.
The West Mamprusi Municipal Police Command has assured that the security personnel will ensure a peaceful process without incident.
The two candidates in this rerun election are the incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera and Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru, technical advisor at the Office of the Vice-President.
