Scrap ORAL, it’s about political goals, not anti-corruption

Kwaku Ansah-Asare has strongly criticized the government’s establishment of the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) committee, questioning its necessity and accusing it of serving political interests rather than addressing corruption effectively.

Speaking during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on January 14, the former director of the Ghana School of Law, not mince words in expressing his scepticism about the initiative.

“They may mean well, but from my perspective, ORAL is just about settling political goals. We don’t need that sort of thing,” he stated.

The ORAL committee, introduced under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, was tasked with recovering public funds allegedly misappropriated or stolen by individuals and entities.

While its intention appears noble on paper, Ansah-Asare believes the effort is redundant given the existing anti-corruption bodies in Ghana, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

“The president could have empowered these existing bodies instead of creating a new committee,” he argued.

“We already have institutions with the capacity to handle these issues if they are adequately resourced and given the freedom to operate without political interference.”

Ansah-Asare also warned of potential pitfalls with the ORAL committee, expressing concern about its operational methods.

“ORAL will become one of the many entities presidents have established only to realize that members of the committee will take the law into their own hands and do things that, from a commonsense perspective, should not be done,” he remarked.

He urged President Mahama to reconsider the decision and abolish the committee altogether. “The earlier he scraps it, the better. Failure to do so will only lead to the embarrassment of the person who set it up,” he cautioned.
