‘Pure Water’: Lack of expiry dates, polluted sources endangering consumers – Dr Sunkari warns

A Geological Engineer and Expert in Sustainable Water Resources Management Dr Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari has warned that the poor labelling on filtered drinking water ( known widely as pure water) and sourcing water for pure water production from polluted sources pose a grave danger to the health of consumers.

Dr Sunkari, who is a Lecturer at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), explained that information on most brands of ‘pure water’ is unclear on when the water will expiry, putting consumers at risk of drinking expired water. He warned that “Best Before Three Months” labels on sachets of water do not enable consumers to know the wholesomeness or otherwise of the water they drink.

“The Ghana Statistical Service has reported that the pure water we drink may contain human feces. Most of the boreholes we rely on for water are located in our homes, where we use the water for bathing, washing dishes, and other purposes. Sachet water manufacturers also source their water from these boreholes,” he said on Info Radio in an interview recently.

‘He continued that: “The “Best Before Three Months” label usually written on the sachet of water does not provide information on the actual expiration date of the water.”

Dr Sunkari added that poor storage of water also poses a risk to consumers, advising pure water producers to store water properly in accordance with the guidelines provided to them by their regulators.
