Protesters must be treated with dignity – Alan on arrest of Anti-Galamsey demonstrators

Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, has added his voice to the ongoing “Free The Citizens” campaign following the arrest of protesters demonstrating against illegal mining (galamsey).

In a tweet, Mr Kyerematen condemned the denial of basic rights to those detained, emphasizing that such actions cannot be tolerated in any democratic society, particularly in Ghana.

He urged the Ghana Police and relevant authorities to ensure that all those who were arrested during the protests receive humane treatment. This includes being granted access to legal representation, the opportunity to communicate with loved ones, and access to essential necessities. “I entreat the Ghana Police and other relevant authorities to ensure that all those detained are treated with dignity,” Kyerematen stated.

The protests, which aimed to call attention to the harmful effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment, led to confrontations with law enforcement and a series of arrests. Many activists and citizens have since voiced concerns over the treatment of those in custody, with the “Free The Citizens” movement gaining traction as a result.

Kyerematen’s statement further fuels the ongoing conversation about the right to protest and the responsibility of authorities to uphold democratic principles, even in the face of civil unrest. His support for the protesters underscores the growing calls for justice and accountability in handling such demonstrations.
