The president of Namibia, Dr Nangolo Mbumba, has congratulated the newly elected secretary general of the Commonwealth and Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
Ms Botchwey was elected as the seventh secretary general of the Commonwealth at the just-ended Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Meeting (CHOGM), held in Apia, Samoa.
In a post on the official Facebook wall of the Office of the President in Windhoek, President Nangolo Mbumba stated in his congratulatory message that he is confident Ms Botchwey will steer the affairs of the Commonwealth excellently, taking the organisation to new heights.
“President Nangolo Mbumba congratulates Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her selection as the seventh secretary general of the #Commonwealth,” the posted message said.
During the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Meeting, which concluded on 26 October 2024 in Apia, Samoa, the Commonwealth of Nations selected Honourable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to serve as the seventh secretary general of the Commonwealth.
“In the same vein, on behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Namibia, I wish to thank the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland for the excellent leadership she provided to the Commonwealth during her tenure.
“I wish Right Honourable Scotland success in her future endeavours,” the Facebook post said.
