President-elect Mahama pays courtesy call on Yagbonwura

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on the Overlord of Gonjaland, Agoura Bii-Kunuto Jewusoale I, at his palace in Damongo in the Savannah Region.

Mahama said his visit was to enable him to present his victory in the December 7 general election to his father, the Yagbonwura.

“I am home, this is where I was born in Damongo many years ago and I have come back home to greet my father and present the victory that I have earned to him,” the President-elect stated.

“I know that it is with his prayers that we have achieved this success. From the day that I sent a delegation led by our Party Chairman to come and see him and to inform him that I have been selected by my Party to be the flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

“I know that my father has not slept. He has roamed the length and breadth of this country. He has prayed to our ancestors. He has seen his fellow chiefs and told them his son is standing for the election and he has canvassed their support for me.”

He noted that as they had got the victory, it was only appropriate that he brought the victory and put it in his hands, so that he would hold it and continue to stand behind him.

“So that the difficult part that is ahead of us, as I said, the campaign and the election was the easy part. Now the difficult part is handling this country and making it peaceful and prosperous for not only the Gonja Kingdom but for the whole of Ghana,” Mahama said.

He appealed to Yagbonwura, chiefs, imams and other religious leaders to continue praying.

“We all know our economy is in crisis. There’s hardship in the land so that we can work hard to turn our fortunes around and create prosperity and dignity for all Ghana’s people,” he said.

“My father advised me that I cannot handle the country alone. I have to select people to support me in administering the country. “And so I should choose people who are who have a good heart and who have the interest of Ghanaians at heart.”

The incoming president said it was impossible to open the head of a human being and see what the person was or to look into a person’s heart to know what their emotions were, declaring that “and so I pray that God gives me the sense of wisdom and to be able to choose the right people to join me to be able to create economic prosperity for the people of Ghana.”

“Today is a happy day not only for Gonjaland, my father, and our chiefs and imams and the people of Gonjaland. It is a happy day for the whole of Ghana. This electoral success is a win for all of Ghana, not only myself.”
