President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reassured Ghanaians that the recent power outages across the country are over, attributing the challenges to technical and capacity issues rather than financial constraints.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Hello FM on Tuesday (26 November), the President acknowledged the disruptions in power supply over the past fortnight but emphasized that the government, together with key stakeholders in the energy sector, has resolved the problems.
“We’ve had challenges, especially in the last couple of weeks, and the Ghana Gas supply tripped. We’ve had capacity challenges during this period, which resulted in the power outages. This is not financial,” President Akufo-Addo clarified.
He explained that load management issues were due to capacity constraints, adding that key facilities like the Asogli power plant, which had been out of the system, are now back online.
“Asogli, which was out of the system, is now back. But today, we can assure the country that there would be uninterrupted supply. There would be full load, and management is now completely secure and stable,” the President stated confidently.
The recent outages had sparked public outcry, with concerns over the potential impact on businesses and livelihoods. President Akufo-Addo’s assurance comes as a relief to many Ghanaians who had feared a return to the protracted “dumsor” era.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured the public of uninterrupted power supply following successful negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) over outstanding payments.
The government is reported to have reached a temporary agreement with the IPPs, addressing part of the arrears while outlining a payment plan for the balance. This resolution is expected to stabilize electricity generation and ease tensions within the energy sector.
ECG’s External Communications Manager, Nii Ayiku, confirmed that the negotiations had averted the potential crisis.
“We are engaging with the IPPs to make sure that the outages that were experienced over the weekend won’t continue. It is not just about the IPPs that are having issues with the ECG, but as indicated by the Acting Management Director, we are in full engagement with the IPPs, and we are very sure and hopeful that everything will fall into place,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.
