The Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency, John Abdulai Jinapor has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to pay the outstanding debt for the power used by the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs)
During an interview on Joy News, John Jinapor disclosed that the load-shedding has been ongoing since January and the main cause of this problem was shortage of fuel hence the committee recommended that in order to curtail the problem, there was a need to restore the cash waterfall mechanism.
He however disclosed that the Finance Minister owes an amount of GHc2 billion which is yet to be paid.
“The Ministry of Finance owes more than GHc2 billion of power consumed by MMDAs and its hasn’t been paid. So we encourage government to pay that money so the power sector can have money to procure fuel”. He said
According to Mr.Jinapor, he researched and discovered the debt has hiked to GHc2.2 billion but the Finance Ministry are yet to make any payment.
He further disclosed that Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (ENI), an Italian multinational energy company has reduced its gas supply because they are yet to receive any form of payment from the finance ministry, hence it has forced the ENI to withdraw their supply of gas.
The former Deputy Power MInister stated that due to the upcoming elections, the strategy the NPP government has adopted is a palliative measures; a way to manage it and later dump the debt and crisis on the next administration to pay off the debt and solve the crisis.
“I think the next government should be prepared for a difficult task when it comes to the energy sector. From an estimation, we need about GHC2 billion to clear that pipeline and that’s very very worrying”, he expressed concern.
