Mr. Joseph Ade-Coker, the former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has clarified that the 2012 “Dumsor” crisis was not caused by John Mahama.
Speaking with Naa Ashorkor on TV3’s New Day, Mr. Ade-Coker explained that upon assuming office in 2012, John Mahama inherited a power crisis resulting from an imbalance between Ghana’s electricity generation capacity and its growing population.
Recognizing this, Mahama took decisive steps to address the issue. “The power crisis was not John Mahama’s fault.
At the time of Ghana’s independence, our population was just over six million, and we relied on diesel-powered machines for electricity.
During those years, power supply was so limited that at 6 p.m., you would see your television struggling due to low energy output,” he stated.
He further elaborated: “As the population grew, we failed to expand our power generation capacity to match demand. When John Mahama assumed office, he made it his mission to resolve this crisis.
However, solving problems of this scale inevitably comes with challenges.”
Mr. Ade-Coker also pointed out that political opponents capitalized on the period of Mahama’s efforts to resolve the electricity challenges, misleading Ghanaians into believing he was responsible for Dumsor.
In conclusion, he emphasized that John Mahama should be credited for taking significant steps to resolve the power crisis rather than being blamed for it.
