Place your confidence in NPP, vote for Dr Bawumia – Akufo-Addo to Ghanaians

President Akufo-Addo has passionately appealed to Ghanaians to trust the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and vote for its Vice President and presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming 7 December 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Akufo-Addo made the call in his address at a ceremony to commission the second phase of the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange on Friday, 29 November 2024, noting that the upcoming elections “represents a defining moment for the nation to sustain the progress we have made, and to bring ongoing projects to completion.”

“I urge you to place your confidence in the New Patriotic Party (NPP). A vote for the outstanding Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia and the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma Central, the excellent Jefferson Sackey, is a vote for continuity, for growth, and for a brighter future for our beloved nation,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.

Improved commute

President Akufo-Addo noted that the newly commissioned phase two of the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange will reduce travel costs, improve productivity, and transform the daily commute for thousands of Ghanaians.

“This project is a catalyst for economic vibrancy in the capital and will facilitate the seamless movement of goods and services, thereby reducing the cost of doing business and attracting the much-needed investments to the region,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“It (the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange phase two) is indeed a cornerstone of our broader vision to establish an integrated, modern, transformation network that [underscores] Ghana’s socio-economic transformation,” Akufo-Addo added.

Pivotal step

Minister for Road and Highways and NPP member of Parliament for Bantama in the Ashanti Region Francis Asenso Boakye, for his part, indicated that the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange phase two represents a pivotal step in his Ministry’s programme to enhance urban mobility, reduce travel times, and boost productivity on major arterial roads in urban centres.

“By upgrading the existing roundabout to a three-tier interchange, we have addressed one of the most challenging traffic issues in Accra. This ambitious transformation will significantly improve traffic flow between key arterials, including the Ring Road West towards the Nkrumah Interchange and the Ring Road West Extension towards Abossey Okai,” Asenso Boakye noted.

“This interchange is for you, the people of Ghana. It is now in our hands to maintain it with care, use it responsibly, and ensure its longevity for generations to come. Let us work together to preserve this legacy and continue building a brighter future for our nation,” the Bantama lawmaker added.

The O.L. interchange

The Obetsebi Lamptey Circle is a key intersection in the arterial road network in Accra. It is part of the Ring Road system and located at the intersection of four major arterials: the Kaneshie Mallam Road (Dr. Kofi Busia Highway), the Ring Road West, the Ring Road West Extension, and the Graphic Road.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways commenced construction of the Obetsebi Lamptey interchange in 2019 as part of strategies to address congestion in urban Accra.

The project was to be constructed as a three-tier interchange. The ground level was to be a roundabout. The second tier was to be a bridge lifting commuter from Dr Busia Highway to Graphic Road and vice versa without any interruption at the ground level. The third tier was to be a bridge from Ring Road West to Ring Road West Extension.

The construction of the interchange was phased; Phase I was the second tier, and Phase II was the ground level and the third tier. Phase I was completed and commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 24 November 2020

Messrs QGMI UK executed the project. Messrs FAS Consult Ltd was the supervising consultant on behalf of the Urban Road Division of the National Roads Authority. The project was funded by the Government of Ghana and UKEF.
