Ghanaian Political Broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere has launched a book chronicling events that have shaped the country’s Fourth Republic since its establishment in 1992.
The book Titled Africa’s New Constitutional Leadership: 77 Stories that Defined Ghana’s 4th Republic offers a comprehensive examination of key moments in Ghana’s democratic development.
The launch attracted a number of prominent figures, including Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, and Citi FM and Channel One TV Managing Director Samuel Attah-Mensah, among other distinguished guests.
Describing the book as a “narrative of Ghana’s democratic journey,” Mr. Adom-Otchere shared that it provides valuable insights into the country’s constitutional transitions, political milestones, and the roles of influential individuals and institutions in shaping its governance.
In an address the minister for foreign affairs and secretary-general elect of the commonwealth Shirley Ayorkor Botchway lauded the book for its detailed portrayal of Ghana’s democratic progress. “This democracy, with its widely-celebrated longevity, was not originally guaranteed,” she noted. She highlighted the role of Ghanaians in establishing the Fourth Republic, stating, “Our Fourth Republic did not come into being through external pressure or the activism of well-meaning foreigners. It was the Ghanaian people themselves, through their institutions and political parties, who navigated the processes of democracy with remarkable dedication.”
The book also explores landmark policies, such as the introduction of Free Senior High School in 2017, and underscores the vital role of independent media in supporting Ghana’s democratic development.
