Party activists handling security during this election does not make sense—Kwasi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwasi Pratt, has explained that it does not make sense for ministers who are political party activists to be allowed to take some security decisions ahead of the 2024 elections.

Mr. Pratt was commenting on the decision by the Interior Ministry to close down all land borders of the country ahead of the 2024 elections.

To him, the decision taken by the interior minister renders the security task force led by the Inspector General of Police useless.

“Now we have ten hours to elections and I’m deeply worried that we have a situation where Ministers who are card-bearing members of a political party are taking security decisions. I would have thought that look you set up this elections security committee headed by the Inspector General of Police as a means of distancing political party activists from being in charge of security.

You are handing over security in terms of this election to party activists, and that is a huge problem. So I am getting increasingly worried within these few hours based on the announcements which are being made, based on the actions which are being taken, and some of them do not make sense at all and we will need some clarification.

Background

Ghana goes to the polls today to elect leaders who will steer the affairs of the country for the next four years.

The Interior Ministry in a statement on December 7 announced that all land borders in the country have been closed down and will be reopened on Sunday December 8, 2024.

The decision is to allow free, fair and transparent elections.
