President of the Ghana Athletics President Bawa Fuseini has said that the athletics team has had the best preparations for the 2024 Olympic Games compared to the previous editions.
Ghana’s Olympic team will feature nine athletes at the Paris 2024 Games, seven participating in track and field events.
The track and field events at the Paris Olympic Games are scheduled for 1-11 August 2024.
Meanwhile, Team Ghana will depart for Strasbourg on 7 July for an intensive two-week training camp before relocating to the Olympic Village in Paris.
Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu secured spots at the Games through the World Athletics Ranking System, which ended on June 30. Azamati will compete in his second Olympics, while Saminu will make his Olympic debut in the 200m event, having met the entry standard.
Edwin Gadayi, the 2024 GNPC Fastest Human, will join forces with Joseph Paul Amoah, the 200m African Games Gold Medalist, Fuseini Ibrahim, Benjamin Azamati, and Isaac Botsio to compete in the 4x100m relay event.
Edwin Gadayi will join forces with Joseph Paul Amoah, the 200m African Games Gold Medalist, Fuseini Ibrahim, Benjamin Azamati, and Isaac Botsio to compete in the 4x100m relay event.
Preparations started at the end of the African Games in March 2024. National team athletes have competed in at least 4 competitions this year.
Team Ghana participated for the first time in the Pennsylvania Relays, a World Standard event in April.
From there, they went to the Bahamas for the World Relays and returned to compete in the West African championships in Accra in May.
In June the team traveled to Douala, Cameroon for African championships, and now they are ready to go for a two-week camping in Crips in Strasburg, France.
“We wish we could have got more from the Sports Minister and the GOC but what we’ve got is something that we do appreciate.”-Bawa Fuseini said on TeamTalk on Saturday( July,6).
“We are just hoping that nothing happens to the athlete right from now to the end of the Olympic Games
The preparation has been the best so far because the national team has competed in no less than four competitions this year.
Normally, we only have our national championship, the athlete will have their school races -when they finish school, they normally do not get in other races apart from the major competitions.
That was one of our major headaches. The school programs end around the end of May and June the athletes especially those in school struggle to get competitions.”- he added.
