The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has outlined several initiatives by the College of Education Studies aimed at improving basic education within the Cape Coast Metropolis.

Prof. Boampong highlighted the college’s “Adopt a School Project,” which was designed to enhance teaching and learning at selected low-performing basic schools in the region. “The project was initiated to improve the educational standards of these schools,” he explained.

Additionally, Prof. Boampong shared that the College of Education Studies had organized two Continuous Professional Development workshops for teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES) across seven districts and municipalities in the Central Region. This announcement was made during the graduation ceremony of 1,759 students from the Institute of Education, who completed the three-semester, sandwich-mode programme in the 2023/2024 academic year.

Prof. Boampong further disclosed that the Institute of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and the Trade Unions Congress, was running special programmes for non-professional teachers in private schools under the Ghana CARES ‘Obaatanpa’ Programme. These programmes include a Certificate in Education, a one-year B.Ed, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

The Vice Chancellor also emphasized the Institute’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of Colleges of Education through workshops, seminars, and training programmes. These initiatives focus on areas such as good governance, administration, finance, student services, campus security, academic research, and the operations of the committee system.

However, Prof. Boampong expressed concern over the shortage of residential facilities to accommodate the increasing number of students applying to study at the institution. He noted that this lack of accommodation posed a significant challenge, potentially undermining efforts to ensure the safety and security of students.

“Despite our efforts and commitment to collaborate with investors to address the accommodation problems, our attempts have been unsuccessful,” Prof. Boampong lamented.
