Oti River: Man drowns while fixing broken ferry in Dambai

A 42-year-old ferry repairer drowned in the river while repairing a malfunctioning ferry in Dambai in the Oti Region.

The diver was part of the operation team addressing the challenges of the pontoon.

An eyewitness, Francis Gago Sena, said in an interview with Asaase News that the diver attempted to troubleshoot the engine when he drowned.

The Ghana Navy rescue team tried to revive him but was unsuccessful.

Confirming the incident to the media, the Assembly Member for the Dambai Central Assembly, Charles Awuranyi, said the ferry was stranded in the middle of the Oti River, prompting the deceased and another staff member to enter the water to repair the damage.

“The incident occurred in the evening of 2 August when the ferry carrying goods and passengers got stuck after an engine failure.”

“The engineers decided to check, and the fault was detected, so two staff decided to go and fix the fault underwater. Unfortunately, one of the staff drowned, was retrieved from the water and has been sent to the Worawora Hospital for preservation and pending autopsy,” Awuranyi explained.

Meanwhile, the entire Dambai community has been plunged into a state of mourning for the loss of a man who was not only a skilled diver but also a beloved husband and father.
