Political analyst and fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), John Osae-Kwapong, has praised New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia for his gracious concession to opposition candidate John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election.
Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Monday (9 December), Osae-Kwapong described Bawumia’s concession speech as a refreshing display of statesmanship.
“It brought back for me memories of 2008 Dr. Bawumia—when he first appeared on the political scene,” he said. “The speech was very refreshing; again, it was very statesmanlike.”
“Gracious in defeat but also reassured his supporters that, whilst you may have lost the battle, this is not the end of the fight.”
The analyst commended Bawumia for prioritising the nation’s peace over political interests, noting that the gesture helped reduce tensions in what had been a highly charged electoral season.
“He wasn’t obligated to do what he did yesterday,” Osae-Kwapong observed. “He could have still waited for official declaration from the EC but as he mentioned, for the sake of peace, reducing the tensions because you know how political temperaments get during elections but overall, for me, it was a very commendable, statesmanlike thing to do.”
The decision by Bawumia, according to Osae-Kwapong, emphasises a commitment to Ghana’s democratic stability, setting a high standard for political conduct.
His actions have been widely lauded as a reminder of the importance of placing the nation’s unity above partisan interests, particularly during crucial moments in the country’s democratic journey.
