Labour unions in the country have declared a nationwide strike effective 10 October, to register their displeasure over government’s inaction against illegal mining also known galamsey.
The announcement comes after today’s emergency meeting by the unions. The unions had earlier given the government up till the end of September to address the illegal mining menace.
A statement signed by the unions on Tuesday (1 October) urged their members to stay at home from 10 October until government meets their demand.
“Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of the government to meet our demands on illegal mining (galamsey). Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect on 10 October, 2024.”
“We are, therefore, calling on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, until the government accede to our demands,” part of the statement read.
