Opinion: Dear Mahama, your attacks on Dr Bawumia highlights your own shortcomings

Dear Mr John Mahama, I trust this letter finds you well. Your recent attempts to attack the venerable Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during your public engagements have only served to highlight your own shortcomings. Your jibes have been nothing but a stark reflection of your own character, and it is astonishing that you have failed to recognize the irony of your accusations.

Your situation reminds us of the old saying that ‘when you point a finger at someone, three fingers point back at you’ – a truth that has never been more apparent than in your recent endeavors to discredit a man of unparalleled integrity and vision, Dr Bawumia.

For instance, upon realising how superior Dr Bawumia’s policy proposals are as compared to yours, you suggested that Dr Bawumia should rather implement all his policies now, rather than wait until he wins the 2024 elections. This remark overlooks several critical points and raises questions about your inconsistency and the practicality of your mischievous suggestions.

Firstly, your own political career offers a pertinent comparison. You served as Vice President before becoming President following the unfortunate passing of President John Atta Mills. During your tenure in both roles, you had ample opportunity to implement your policies, some of which you and your party cannot even explain like the 24-hour economy proposal.

However, despite having full presidential authority, you still sought and still seeking re-election, campaigning on promises of new policies and improvements. This naturally raises the question: if you needed more time to implement your policies as President, how realistic is it to expect Dr. Bawumia, without presidential authority, to achieve the same with few months to 2024?

Furthermore, it is essential to recognize the fundamental difference between the roles of a Vice President and a President. This is a fact you of all people should be first to acknowledge. The primary responsibility for policy implementation lies with the President, not the Vice President.

Dr Bawumia serves under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, and while he plays a significant role in shaping and advocating for policies, he does not have the ultimate authority to unilaterally implement them. Expecting Dr Bawumia to execute policies independently of the President is unrealistic and mischievously misrepresents the structure of executive governance.

I urge you to focus on presenting your own vision and policies for the country rather than resorting to hypocrisy and desperation. The Ghanaian people deserve better.

They expect detailed plans and clear explanations, especially regarding your proposal for a 24-hour economy, rather than mere jibes at your political opponents. Be bold to accept Dr Bawumia’s proposal for a debate. This will contribute to a more informed and constructive political discourse that benefits all Ghanaians.

In conclusion, be reminded once more that Ghanaians appreciate the fact that if you, with all the executive power at your disposal as President, could not implement your policies leading to you losing the 2016 elections, how much more Dr Bawumia, who is just a Vice President? Banging your hopes on your long-held belief that Ghanaians have “short memories” will not save you.
