One arrested as five-member committee probes assault on KUMACA female student

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has established a five-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault of a female student at Kumasi Academy (KUMACA).

The committee, formed on Thursday (15 August) has been given one week to present its findings and recommendations for further action.

The investigation follows the emergence of a disturbing video that has gone viral on social media, showing several students from the school violently assaulting the final-year female student.

Asaase News gathers that a security guard who was involved in the act has been arrested and is currently assisting with investigations.

The Asokore Mampong municipal education director Samson Anawine Atogembero condemned the incident, confirming that the victim has been identified and provided with medical treatment.

“It is unfortunate and disturbing”, the director said.

“I see it as an abuse of a girl child, so we’ve taken the necessary measures and so the security man has been arrested by the police… We’ve formed a committee to investigate this matter and also identify the boys involved. Now the girl is calm. She was sent to the health centre and her parents have been informed”.

“Outbreak”

Kumasi Academy made headlines in 2017 after at least four students died mysteriously, sparking fear and panic on campus.

Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah had indicated autopsy reports from different facilities on three of the four deceased pointed to meningitis- an inflammation of the meninges, the covering of the brain and spinal cord.

Health authorities intensified surveillance in the school to curb such fatalities.
