NSA refutes claims of T&A Stadium mismanagement

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has strongly denied allegations circulating on social media that the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Benjamin Kesse, has taken control of the Tarkwa & Abosso (T&A) Stadium in Tarkwa, Western Region.

Reports had suggested that the MCE removed NSA staff from the facility, citing poor maintenance.

In an interview with 3Sports, Kesse claimed, “Things are not working. If you attend a programme at the stadium, you will realise that for the past one month, the washrooms are as dirty as you can think of.”

Kesse further expressed concerns over the stadium’s deteriorating condition, stating that inaction could lead the facility to suffer the same fate as other poorly maintained stadiums in the country.

In response, the NSA, in a statement dated Wednesday (18 September), dismissed these claims as “false” and accused Kesse of attempting to take advantage of the authority’s challenges in other regions.

“The said news seeks to take advantage of the current difficulties of the NSA in other regions to create the false impression that the facility which was handed over to the NSA in just a month ago has been run down,” the statement read.

The T&A Stadium, a 400-capacity facility completed in June 2024 at a cost of $16.2 million, was funded by Gold Fields Ghana and formally handed to the NSA on 16 August 2024.

During the commissioning, Razak Abubakar, Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Foundation, assured that the stadium would be properly maintained as the Ghana Premier League season approached.

The NSA has reiterated its commitment to maintaining the facility, highlighting its collaboration with the Gold Fields Foundation and the implementation of user fees for football clubs.

“The National Sports Authority, with the assistance from the Gold Fields Foundation and the insistence on user fees from football clubs, has so far provided exceptional maintenance service at the Stadium,” the statement continued.

“Right from the GHALCA Top 4 Tournament through to the Champions of Champions and the Medeama First League match, everybody present, including dignitaries, were very much appreciative of the work done by [the] National Sports Authority.”

The NSA also addressed claims that local community members, led by Kesse, had raised concerns about neglect under its oversight. The authority labelled these allegations as misinformation designed to tarnish its reputation.

It further accused certain clubs of attempting to “personalise” the use of the stadium, stating, “It’s false that the ‘community’ wants to take over the stadium but true that certain powerful stakeholders are attempting to personalise use of a public asset for [the] club.”

“The stadium is a national facility and the NSA, as empowered by law, will ensure equity in access and use for all users and all sports.”
