Kofi Tonto, a political aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed confidence that the party will recapture the Ayensuano constituency seat in the Eastern Region come 7 December.
The constituency was narrowly lost to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 election.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Monday (12 August), Tonto reflected on the previous defeat, attributing it to internal divisions within the party.
“Ayensuano is one of the constituencies that we’ve had for quite some time. Honourable [Samuel] Ayeh-Paye went for three times, but we lost Ayensuano to the NDC by 200 votes, mainly because of division within the party when Honourable Ayeh-Paye lost all the other challenges that we had,” he said.
Tonto assured that the NPP is better positioned for the upcoming election, highlighting a newfound unity within the party.
He revealed that all individuals who contested in the primary have now pledged their support to the party’s candidate, Ida Adjoa Asiedu.
“But now the good thing is that the people have come together and all the various persons who contested at the primary level have all pledged to support the candidate. So Ayensuano seems very united; they have a very united front and [are] ready to work together,” Tonto added.
