Kwadjo Asante, the sitting Member of Parliament for Suhum, is reportedly considering contesting the 2024 general election as an independent candidate after losing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, also known as Protozoa.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (12 August), Kofi Tonto, an aide to the NPP presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, acknowledged that the potential independent bid by Asante poses a “small challenge” for the party, as Suhum is traditionally a stronghold of the governing party.
“We do have a small challenge in Suhum because the current MP, who lost the primary to ‘Protozoa’, wants to contest as an independent,” Tonto said.
However, he revealed that efforts are underway to bring Asante back into the party’s fold. Tonto said Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi, is currently leading the charge in engaging Asante with hopes of securing his support for the upcoming election.
“Discussions are ongoing to bring him back to the fold. Honourable Bryan Acheampong is leading that charge to work with him to bring him back to the fold. I think we’ve made great gains in terms of engagement with him and we hope that he will come on board to really solidify our base for us to forge ahead,” Tonto added.
The Suhum Member of Parliament, Kwadjo Asante, who was seeking re-election, lost his second term bid to Frank Aseidu Bekoe.
Bekoe had 496 votes while Asante also had 320 votes.
